I was surprised about Satisfaction also, but like other people said, this list (and others like it) are purely subjective. Someone's favorite riff, song, athlete, porn star or whatever is going to be left off these lists sometimes!
What was up with that Seven Nation Army dude?! I like the WS's but geez you don't have to get all weirded out about a f'n riff!

I looked up the guitar tab for Satisfaction. I was surprised to see that the intro riff is played on one string (with different frets). Maybe I just found a lame version of the tab. In any case, it is one of the most recognizable riffs in rock.

Music means history and at personal level it means a lot to each of us. I also have songs that follow me through my life. Due to the fact that I am 31 years old, my music is different, but the feeling is probably similar.

Yes, it does look like the Sears Roebuck Catalog of good/ better/ best gwitar riffs... my favorite is #20 on that list.

When this group did this in around 68?, .. i at 13 knew this would be a great sound for the rest of my life. In this orchestration the chord-riffs rhythm, is one long solo, in front of the entire piece. Rhythmic accents...chichichi ka-chawww, ka-chawww speak for my generation. They sound like choppers overhead, whipping wind into sound.

In those years, We are sons of the WWII veterans, waiting our number to come up to go to 'Nam. I did not get drafted, and did not enlist, but plenty of my buddies did.

Demonized war, too poor to be a pusher man, I stumbled through somehow unscathed, but I am grateful some thought enough to record the time in history through their songs, riffs and voice.

Anyway, when I pick up I play this style most -- got set in me at early age...

Yep, that one too! I think there are way too many to squeeze them in the top 25 but what pissed me off was the fact that there are some that shouldn't be there IMO.

@KnotTubeRight: Indeed, the list is subjective, just that there are some songs one can not miss. I am not a big fan of Rolling Stones, but Satisfaction is one of the most known guitar riffs in my opinion. But probably if I would compile my own top 25 guitar riffs it would argued too.

@pilgrim: It may be the case, sometimes less is more, right?

When "One" came out I heard the song so many times--I got sick of it. You'd walk into a music store and you'd hear 2 or 3 kids just ruining the riff as well. It was a case of "One" overload---maybe the list's compilers felt the same way.

I think Metallica collectively are pure genius. Having said that ,I do not like them since they killed Napster.Greedy bastards.
Jack White is a master of hooks. You can recognize a White Stripes song immediately. Much the same as Uncle Ted Nugent.
It is all so subjective that it is a moot point. If I listed my top 50 greatest riffs most of you would probably disagree with at least half of my picks.
Satisfaction would not be in my top 50, but Jumpin' Jack Flash would.
Maybe they should go by record sales, but then wouldn't that be Billboards greatest hits?
In the end, the greatest riffs are the ones that make you grab your guitar and learn them, however long it takes.

These greatest whatever lists are completely pointless. Especially one that includes an Iron Maiden riff that is NOT The Trooper.

@Jack White's Boner: Metallica was indeed, very influential, to the point where I couldn't stand it anymore. I used to wear long hair and leather jacket and entered a small local music store. The guy selling CD and cassette tapes asked me: do you want Metallica? Damn! Is it written on my forehead or what? I think also geographical area is very important. Here, the white stripes are not that popular while Metallica was a smashing cultural phenomenon among teenagers in 91-92.

Anon up there: STFU. No place for subjective fanboys anywhere. Metallica rocked (IMO, and according to lots of other people). At least until the Black Album. After that one, they started sucking hard.

"Seven nation army"? One of the greatest songs ever? I, for one, don't like overly simplified rock. It's a matter of taste.

Going back to Metallica... they've got myriads of recognizable riffs. Master Of Puppets? No Remorse? Battery? Fade To Black? Wherever I May Roam? One? All of them greater, IMHO, than that White Stripes song.

Megadeth: Holy Wars, Tornado Of Souls, Train Of Consequences, Symphony Of Destruction...

The problem with lists is that they're completely subjective.
